born on a bad day...

More found grunge in Portland, August 2005.

A note on the processing: last summer I experimented a little with what is called "stand" development: simply plop the film in a weak developer solution and let it just sit there for a couple of hours, no agitation, while goofing off and doing other things.

The technical idea is that you can get good compensating effects with this method, as the weak developer slowly exhausts itself in the highlight regions, while continuing to bring out details in the shadow areas more completely.

But the main attraction for me was the imagined simplicity. Fewer chemicals, fewer steps, and less critical with respect to time and temperature than my usual pyro blend. I thought it might make an especially practical method for processing film when overseas on our next assignment--wherever that might be.

The results are kind of crappy, though. At least for me, nothing yet surpasses the depth and glow of a good pyro negative. After these experiments I'll be sticking with PMK.
